Largely due to our Christian roots, Americans have historically given to and served those in need. Unfortunately, the more government has started doing for people, the less people do for themselves and the less they give to charities and others. The anecdote to this is thoughtful giving by private individuals and organizations that encourage individual initiative, thrift, hard work, and independence. Handouts are only appropriate during emergencies. Chronic problems require respectful relationships that help untap the enormous capacity of each individual. As we lift each other, we become a stronger, freer, more independent people.
